Black Seal Rum
GOSLINGS BLACK SEAL RUM
is the national spirit of Bermuda.
In the spring of 1806, English wine and spirits merchant James Gosling
arrived in St Georges, Bermuda, where he and his family decided
to set up shop. To this day, Gosling Brothers remains the oldest
surviving business in Bermuda. The companys claim to international
fame
is being the creator of Goslings Black Seal Rum.
The Gosling brothers introduced the brand
in 1860 after having experimented with different blends of barrel-aged
Caribbean rum until they created a masterpiece, which they initially
named the Old Rum. During World War I, the company began
filling champagne bottles reclaimed from the British Officers
mess. The corks were secured in place with the use of black sealing
wax. It soon became known as the Black Seal brand.
Goslings Black Seal Rum has a dark
amber/brown color and a compact bouquet of coffee, sugar cane, caramel
and toasted oak. Its palate is a medley of roasted and spicy flavors
that completely fill the mouth before slipping away in a warm, lingering
finish.
It is understandable why Goslings
Black Seal Rum is the best-selling spirit in Bermuda. While a pleasure
to drink neat, it is a delight to mix in cocktails, and is the core
of such classics as the Dark n Stormy and Rum Swizzle.
